As blogged in an earlier post, I recently replaced my router / wireless base station.
It is causing me a lot of trouble and I am wondering if someone else has similar issues or if it is just my unit.
This is my description of the problem sent to the macintouch.com reader report:
I replaced an AirPort Extreme Snow White with the new n version.
I run my website on a Mac on the LAN side, with appropriate port mappings configured from WAN to LAN. This worked flawlessly with the previous base station, but the new one seems to get into a really weird state about every 24 hours, and then I have to reset it. My website and e-mail server basically drop off the net. Some connections still get through (remote login and remote desktop), but they run very very slowly.
My server gets a lot of hits and there are also outgoing file transfers running all the time so I guess the base station sees a lot of traffic in both directions, maybe a lot more than in a typical home setup. However, the old base station never showed this problem.
I am wondering if others have seen similar effects where the base station gets hung up after a while...
Hey Mark,
I'm not web-serving as such from my N unit, but have still had a couple of minor problems, that needed a reset to fix.
I have 4 PCs that wifi into the N unit.
My macbook pro is usually a fair way away from the N unit, so I extend the range a bit (and hook up speakers) by using an AirPort Express (which unfortunately is only a G but solves my previous range issues).
It all seems to work fine for a couple of days or so, until the N decides it doesn't want to talk to the G any longer?
it's easily solved by resetting the N, but still thats a couple of minutes of annoyance.
otherwise the thing is great. I upgraded from Netgear devices previously, so can't say anything about previous devices, other than I've never had a prob with the Express unit.
thanks,
jif
Mark,
I've got a new AEX-N with a webserver on my LAN and I have not seen the problems you describe. In fact, this base station is probably the best I've ever owned. My set up has been running non-stop since I got the AEX-N a couple weeks ago... Note, I'm running the base station at 5 Ghz with 2.4 turned off.
If the problems persist, I'd make an appointment with a Genius and get it swapped out. You deserve better!
Brad
Hi Mark,
The problems with the base stations form Apple are nothing new and after experiencing similar behaviour with the AirPort Express (speaker plopping, sudden disconnects in a WDS config and/or very low signal) I decided to ditch the setup altogether.
IMHO the Apple Airport series are really nice for home use but for SOHO or better I'd recommend a decent brand with a strong focus on developing quality firmware. In the end I got myself a Cisco Aironet for cheap. Might be overkill but I never had a dropout since. Linksys will also do the job, the WTR54G is a very popular and decent router for € 50 that I'm sure you'll like.
Good luck!
S.

Hi mark - I was wonderinf if you fixed your base station problem. I saw that on 30/3/07 apple released a basestation update. Has that helped in any way?
cheers
