Checksum GUI Tool

I updated my small Mac OS X application for calculating file checksums (SHA-1, MD5):

The new version contains a few bug fixes as well as user interface improvements, specifically new user interface elements added in Leopard.

Nice. I have a suggestion for v1.5: add a box that accepts a paste of a checksum, and compares it against the calculated checksum.

I've been thinking generally about the issue of manually comparing sums, say when one is offered on a website as an check of authenticity or correct download. If you're like me, you glance at them, maybe looking in particular at the last few digits, and if they look the same you're OK.

The problem is that a cursory check like that substantially reduces the strength of the checksum, and it's pretty tedious to do a careful comparison (I'd paste them into two BBEdit documents and use the compare-front-two function, I suppose).

So a tool that combines the calculation with the ability to check would be useful. Seems to me.

Jonathan, that’s a nice idea. I implemented it in 1.5, check it out...

That's pretty cute.

Some nits. The two fields are in different fonts, so that if there's a mismatch, it's a little hard to see it.

It was a little disconcerting not to be able to select the Checksum field for copying. (I eventually figured out that I didn't have to, but still...). And once I clicked in the Compare-to field, I couldn't figure out how to select the Checksum field for copying (it turned out that hiding the Compare-to field did the trick).

And if it were me, I'd fade out the red and green a bit, for better contrast and readability.

None of which is all that serious. I'll use it.

Marc,

I am a long time user of your PHP module, and would like to thank you for all your efforts! Good luck moving to the states.

I downloaded 5.3.0-3 today and I am getting errors during the install. The error is "Installed Failed The following install step failed: run postupgrade script for entropy-php. Contact the software manufacturer for assitance."

I am now downloading 5.2.9-7 to test it. Any update or solution to this problem would be great.

As always, thanks for doing all the great work to make it so easy to get PHP up and going on Mac OS X Server.

Hi Marc,

I had a lot of headaches with installing GDLib on OS X Server. Your implementation of PHP 5.30 on OS X Server is now running perfect with my TYPO3 and Magento installations. Thanks so much!

Kind regards,

Christian
